About Add Page Numbers to PDF
Add page numbers to a PDF so readers can find their way around and printed pages stay in order. Choose one of six positions, a format such as 1 / 12 or Page 1 of 12, and Latin, Arabic-Indic, Persian, Devanagari or Roman numerals. You can skip the cover, start from any number and number only selected pages. The numbers are added in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.
How to use Add Page Numbers to PDF
- Add a PDF.
- Pick the position, the format and the numerals, and set the first number and the pages to number.
- Press Add page numbers and download the result.
When it helps
- Number the pages of a thesis or report before printing it.
- Add page numbers to a contract so every page can be referred to clearly.
- Number the pages of a merged application pack so nothing goes missing.
- Continue the numbering of a second volume or an appendix by setting the first number.
Tips
- Tick Skip the first page to leave a cover page unnumbered.
- Merge your files first and add page numbers last, so the numbering runs through the whole document.
- Increase the margin from the edge if the numbers overlap a footer or other content.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use Arabic or Persian numerals?
- Yes. Choose Arabic-Indic (١٢) or Persian (۱۲) numerals, or Devanagari (१२) and Roman (XII, xii). Numbers are drawn as vector shapes with the right font, so you can also write the label in Arabic or Persian, for example "صفحة {n} من {total}". Because they are shapes, the numbers cannot be selected or searched.
- Can I skip the cover page or start at a different number?
- Yes. Tick "Skip the first page" to leave the cover unnumbered, and set the starting number. The first numbered page gets that number, and {total} counts only the pages that are numbered.
- Can I choose where the page number goes?
- Yes. Choose the position on the page and how the number reads, for example "1 / 12". You can also number only selected pages.
- Can I write my own page number format?
- Yes. Choose a custom format and type any label, using the placeholders shown under the field for the page number and the total count.
- Can I add Roman numerals to a PDF?
- Yes. Choose Roman numerals in upper case (XII) or lower case (xii).
