About Redact PDF
Redact a PDF to remove personal data for good before you share it. The tool finds ID numbers, IBANs, card numbers, phone numbers and email addresses in the text, and you can add your own words or draw areas by hand. The text is deleted from the file, not just covered, and the new file is searched again to check. It suits bank statements, contracts and HR files. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to use Redact PDF
- Add a PDF.
- Check the values found, add your own terms or draw areas by hand.
- Press Redact, check the verification and download the result.
When it helps
- Hide your IBAN and card numbers on a bank statement before sending it as proof of address.
- Remove names and phone numbers from a document before sharing it publicly.
- Black out ID numbers on copies of documents you send to a landlord or employer.
- Remove client email addresses from a report before sharing it outside the team.
Tips
- Add names or other words under Also search for, separated by commas, to remove them everywhere they appear.
- Set the country so phone numbers written without a country code are recognised.
- Draw areas by hand over photos, stamps or handwriting, since text inside images is not read.
Frequently asked questions
- Isn't drawing a black box enough?
- No. A box drawn over text only hides it; the text underneath can still be selected, copied or searched. This tool deletes the text itself, draws the black box over the gap and then searches the new file again to make sure nothing is left.
- What about scanned documents?
- Scanned pages are pictures without text, so nothing can be found automatically (text inside images is not read). Draw areas over what you want to hide: those pages are turned into images with the areas blacked out.
- Is my file uploaded?
- No. The file is read and redacted in your browser. The values found are kept only in this tab's memory and are never saved or sent anywhere.
- How can I check the text is really gone?
- After redacting, open the result and try to select, copy or search for a hidden value: it should not be found. The tool also searches the new file itself to make sure nothing is left. Text inside pictures is not read, so check those areas by eye.
- Which kinds of personal data are found automatically?
- Turkish ID numbers, Spanish DNI and NIE, Mexican CURP and RFC, IBANs, card numbers, phone numbers and email addresses. You can also add your own terms, such as names.
- Are comments and form fields kept?
- No. They are removed from the redacted copy, because they may also hold personal data.
