About Protect PDF
Protect a PDF with a password before you email it, share it in the cloud or keep it on a shared computer. The file is encrypted with AES-256, and you can choose whether printing, copying text or editing is allowed. It suits contracts, payslips, tax papers and medical records. The encryption happens in your browser, so neither your file nor your password is ever uploaded.
How to use Protect PDF
- Add a PDF.
- Type a password and choose permissions.
- Press Protect and download the file.
When it helps
- Lock a contract or offer letter before sending it by email.
- Protect tax returns or payslips that you keep in a shared folder.
- Share medical results with family members while keeping them password-protected.
- Send a report to clients with copying and editing switched off.
Tips
- Send the password through a different channel than the file, for example by phone or text message.
- The tool needs at least 4 characters, but a long password is much stronger.
- Some PDF apps ignore printing and copying restrictions, so rely on the password for real protection.
Frequently asked questions
- How strong is the encryption?
- Files are encrypted with AES-256, the strongest PDF encryption standard.
- Can you recover a lost password?
- No. We never see your password, so keep it somewhere safe.
- Is it safe to password-protect a PDF online?
- Here the encryption happens in your browser, so neither the file nor the password is sent anywhere. Choose a long, unique password: the protection is only as strong as the password.
- Can I still open the file myself after protecting it?
- Yes. A PDF reader asks for the password and opens the file once you enter it. Keep a note of the password, because it cannot be recovered.
- Can I stop people from printing or copying my PDF?
- You can switch off printing, copying and editing when you protect it. Some PDF apps ignore these restrictions, though; only the password itself is enforced everywhere.
